• Recently, I have been doing more in the HomeLab. The history of the Lab to this point was initially an upgrade from a Nighthawk router to a Dream Machine. I have no complaints, and while it is super overkill for my needs, it is very nice to have a network system that simply just works.
In addition to the network gear, I have a Synology DiskStation DS916+ as a NAS. Then, to the left of the NAS are two mini PCs I have picked up over the years. The Lenovo box is running Proxmox with some containers I have been messing around. Then, to the left of that is a Dell box that, up until now, has been my dedicated Plex box.

The Lenovo box is the newest addition. A Lenovo M720Q that I picked up on eBay with an 8th Gen i5 and had 8 GB of RAM. Then for the low price of 94 bucks on Amazon, the Lenovo machine was 32 GB of 2400MHz RAM and 1 TB of NVME storage richer.  This combined with a 256Gb SATA SSD I had kicking around and now I have quite the useful virtualization box. These Lenovo boxes along with similar product from HP and Dell are hitting eBay in mass due to them getting phased out of industry and getting phased into homelabs everywhere.
Coming next is getting Plex working on Proxmox and wiping the Dell machine, installing Proxmox on it and clustering the two.
Side Note:  Proxmox installation and setup is worlds easier with these helper scripts over on GitHub highly recommend it.

  • Changing to Rapid7 was an incredible move that has reduced costs and enhanced the university's capabilities.  When Rapid7 reached out and asked if we would like to have a customer story written, we were happy to jump at the chance. The article linked below explains much more depth and definitely worth the read.
